Japanese Vendors Stretch into a Variety of Display Applications

With Korean and Taiwanese vendors dominating the mainstream LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) panel market, Japanese vendors have lost their competitive advantages and are shifting focuses to smart handheld devices or business application devices, such as medical-care displays, public-area displays, or automotive displays based on their existing advantages in the vehicle telematics supply chain.

Further Improvement in Display Performance

Despite smart handheld device specifications becoming mature, there is still room left for display specifications. In the first half of 2014, WQHD panels for smartphones will hit the market, expecting to trigger a new wave of PPI (Pixel per Inch) improvement. Besides, the launch of curved AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) panels has raised the threshold to display specifications differentiation. To compete with them, TFT LCD (Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display) panels have to rely on better performance. Vendors can make more efforts in pixel circuit designs, alignment technologies, or backlight modules so as to improve energy efficiency or display performance.

Touch Panel and Key Materials

Embedded solutions continue to support increasingly large sizes, aiming to stretch into tablets or automotive display products. Out-cell solutions are more cost-focused; hence smaller changes in product specifications.

Further improvements in film materials to maintain display performance are expected.

Touch panel specifications can be flexibly adjusted according to the required functions of end-user products or cost considerations. Due to this reason, upstream materials and process facilities will continue to be enhanced, including ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) film and pattering equipment.
